The Legend

CHAPTERS

The Hungarian word monda (legend) dates from the end of the 18th century and comes from the twin words mende-monda (hearsay). The Hungarian folk does not know the designation monda, for what the literary language calls myth they call “history” (história), “story” (történet), and with that designation they differentiate it from the tale (mese) genre. Two of its large groups, historical legends and legends of superstition and belief, can be clearly distinguished from each other.
