The Dacian Kingdom | I. TRANSYLVANIA IN PREHISTORY AND ANTIQUITY | II. FROM DACIA TO ERDÕELVE: TRANSYLVANIA IN THE PERIOD OF THE GREAT MIGRATIONS (271-896) |
A detailed account of the history and culture of Dacia has yet to be written. For a brief history of the Roman province, see M. MACREA and D. TUDOR, 'Epoca sclavagistă romană (sec. I-III), Dacia în timpul stăpînirii romane', in Istoria Romîniei I (Bucharest, 196O), pp. 345-476; French and German editions were published in 1963 and 1964, respectively. A historical overview is found in the catalogue of the exhibition 'Römer in Rumänien': Ausstellung des Römisch-Germanischen Museums Köln und des Historischen Museums Cluj (Cologne, 1969). Specific aspects are addressed in M. BĂRBULESCU, Interferenţe spirituale în Dacia romană (Cluj-Napoca, 1984); V. CHRISTESCU, Istoria militară a Daciei romane (Bucharest, 1929), and Viaţa economică a Daciei romane (Pitesti, 1929); C. DAICOVICIU, La Transylvanie dans l'Antiquité (Bucharest, 1938), published in German as Siebenbürgen im Altertum (Bucharest, 1943); M. MACREA, Viaţa în Dacia Romană (Bucharest, 1969); and three works by D. TUDOR, Istoria sclavajului în Dacia Romană (Bucharest, 1957), Oltenia Romană (Bucharest, 1968), and Oraşe tîrguri şi sate în Dacia romană (Bucharest, 1968).
Topographic research and finds are detailed according to site in the volumes of Tabula Imperii Romani (TIR), which cover Dacia's entire territory: TIR L-34, Aquincum - Sarmizegethusa - Sirmium (Budapest, 1968); TIR L-35, Romula - Durostorum - Tomis (Bucharest, 1969); TIR K-34, Naissus - Dyrrhachion - Scupi - Serdica - Thessalonike (Ljubljana, 1976). In addition to the international series, see D. TUDOR, TIR: Drobeta - Romula - Sucidava (Bucharest, 1965).
The province's Roman epigraphs are listed in Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (CIL), Volume III. Epigraphs are also dealt with in an ongoing series of publications, Inscriptiones Daciae Romanae (IDR). Vol.I: Introducere {1-777.} istorică şi epigrafică, Diplomele militare, tăbliţele cerate, ed. by I.I. RUSSU (Bucharest, 1975). Vol. II. Oltenia şi Muntenia, ed. by G. FLORESCU and C.C. PETOLESCU (Bucharest, 1977). Vol. III, 1: Dacia Superior, Zona de sud-vest, ed. by I.I. RUSSU (Bucharest, 1977). Vol. III, 2: Dacia Superior, Ulpia Traiana Dacica Sarmizegetusa, ed. by I.I. RUSSU (Bucharest, 1980). A complementary study is that of C.C. PETOLESCU, 'Cronica epigraphică a României I, 1975-1980' (SCIV 32: 1981). A compilation of epigraphic research conducted after the publication of CIL is found in N. GUDEA, 'Beiträge zu einem Literaturnachweis der epigraphischen, das römische Dakien betreffenden Forschung nach 1902' (Arheološki Vestnik 31: 1980).
