There is a dearth of useful studies on John Sigismund and his reign. Apart from the general histories noted earlier, there is a more detailed account by Kálmán SZENTMÁRTONI, János Zsigmond erdélyi fejedelem élet- és jellemrajza (Székelykeresztúr, 1934), but it does not meet scholarly standards. On the castle wars, see Imre LUKINICH, 'Az északkeleti várháborúk történetéhez, 1561-1565' (HK, 1913). The same author's 'Az erdélyi fejedelmi cím kialakulásának története' (Sz 47: 1913) gives details of the negotiations on the Speyer treaty.

There no comprehensive and up-to-date study of Stephen Báthori. See the brief biography by László MAKKAI, Stefan Báthory (Cracow, 1961). Two useful sources, both by Endre VERESS, are Báthori István levelezése I-II (Kolozsvár, 1944), and 'Báthory István király levélváltása az erdélyi kormánnyal, 1581-1585' (MHH-D 42, Budapest, 1948). A good collection of scholarly essays was in Poland: Étienne Báthory, roi de Pologne, prince de Transylvanie (Cracow, 1935); it includes Imre LUKINICH's essay 'La jeunesse d'Étienne Báthory: Étienne Báthory, prince de Transylvanie', which is relevant to this period. A brief survey of the times is given by István SINKOVICS in 'L'union personelle et le problème de la centralisation en Transylvanie à l'époque de la royauté polonaise d'Étienne Báthory' (AUSB Sectio Historica 6: 1964).
